It is a place where the information it gathers and preserves is available to everyone. In this sense, the library is an example of the democratic sharing of knowledge. Compagnia Arearea, drawing on its thirty years of history in dance training and production, aims to create a new wing in this library of knowledge.

The library metaphor guides us in devising a broader project centered on the body, encompassing care for the person/citizen, the enhancement of public cultural spaces (the Civic Museums of Udine and Art Galleries), the adaptation and removal of architectural barriers for the practice of dance in private space (Lo Studio, the Company’s training center in Udine), and the spread of dance as a language through high-quality shows and digital performances at accessible prices.

Our Dance Library consisted of:

Contemporary dance workshops open to participants of all ages and experience levels. The workshops incorporated audience engagement actions and cultural policies aimed at community wellbeing. Led by expert teachers, the workshops gave participants the opportunity to explore contemporary dance movements and techniques. Open and free courses for all ages aimed to rediscover dance as a gathering point and a source of social wellbeing.
Each wing of our library was dedicated to a specific community, with the further goal of connecting different social groups. The body and the non-verbal language of dance were meant to foster intergenerational dialogue.

List of workshops:

Dancing over 50: A workshop designed specifically for those who want to explore the potential of movement, regardless of age.
Cheek to Cheek: A workshop to practice and study various couple dances and their evolution, in an informal setting where the body can feel free to dance together with others.
Ginnastica Antalgica (Pain-Relief Gymnastics): A program dedicated to bodily wellbeing and mindful movement, designed to relieve pain and restore fluidity.
Contakids: A movement methodology for children aged 2 to 5 and their parents or caregivers.
TeenDance: An adventure dedicated to exploring the world of dance and movement, designed specifically for teenagers.
BellyDance: A gentle exercise practice designed for pregnant women.
Dance Park: Weekly dance workshops aimed in particular at people with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers.
Danze Magiche (Magic Dances): Dance and body-awareness workshops for students of Radio Magica Academy (a post-diploma cultural academy for young adults with disabilities).
Pianeta Danza (Planet Dance): Dance and body-awareness sessions for students taking part in the Palio Studentesco. After seven intensive weeks of training, a residency period followed, during which small working groups could develop projects and tour within the Giacimenti network — an Italian network for the development and emergence of young talent. Alta Formazione included museum visits, meetings with musicians, meetings with industry professionals, online lectures on dance history, participation in performances and cultural events, and sessions on the technical and organizational fundamentals of the dance profession (national collective labor agreement, CCNL). At the time, it was the only project in the Region dedicated to promoting professional dance.

Off Label_rassegna per una nuova danza (15th edition): A program attentive to green themes and to reaching a broad and diverse audience, pairing performances with study paths that foster accessibility and the ability to interpret performing arts events. The artistic direction’s spirit was to fill a gap in performance opportunities for local young people. Off Label was open to hosting the new creative drives of those who needed it. The shows involved local and national dance and dance-theatre companies, giving audiences the chance to enjoy high-quality performances in an informal, welcoming setting, while also supporting early-stage studies and open rehearsals. With the aim of bringing a diverse audience closer to the languages of dance, Off Label placed its program in a peripheral space of the city of Udine (Lo Studio) and in unconventional locations across Udine, in collaboration with the Comune di Udine.

Arearea Dance Library aimed to enhance Udine’s public cultural spaces as reference centers for training in body awareness and disciplines, with the goal of reaching and drawing in new, younger audiences to live art.

Redevelopment of the Lo Studio space_contemporary dance center. The new Lo Studio_contemporary dance center is located at the end of an industrial complex and underwent renovation with careful attention to removing architectural barriers.
