Each archival act spans a timeline expressed through the\u00a0far past<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0very recent<\/em>.\u00a0Estremo Remoto<\/em>\u00a0(Far Past) connects contemporary dance with the hidden histories of the\u00a0Trieste State Archives, offering the audience a unique perspective on the admission records of abandoned and orphaned children between\u00a01770 and 1909.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series consists of\u00a082 registers\u00a0documenting the intake of infants left at the foundling wheel (ruota degli esposti<\/em>). Beyond recording the child\u2019s name, mother\u2019s name, birth\/baptism date and place, wet nurse details, and handover date, the registers also note the\u00a0“segnale di esposizione”<\/em>\u00a0(exposure token) number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These\u00a0tokens\u2014small paper envelopes\u2014might hold a ribbon, a medallion, a prayer card, half a playing card, a fabric scrap, or a letter. They served as identifiers should the child ever be reclaimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from these tokens,\u00a0Marta Bevilacqua\u00a0(Compagnia Arearea \u2013 Udine) and\u00a0Stefano Mazzotta\u00a0(Compagnia Zerogrammi \u2013 Torino) initiate a\u00a0choreographic research\u00a0exploring concepts like\u00a0body\/memory\/archive\/border<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as dance emerges from movements and gestures that precede us\u2014belonging to collective memory\u2014history, too, is woven from seemingly insignificant lives that, intertwined, shape events. The archival approach condenses these objects and geographies, transforming individuals into\u00a0dancing memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
