Brote Digital

2023

BROTE DIGITAL is a performative project weaving together contemporary dance, butoh dance, and circus arts. It consists of three modules: BLACK, WHITE, RED. These are designed to function narratively both individually and in sequence. The common thread running through the modules is self-discovery and the search for the outside, the exploration of balance: the three (or one) non-characters are marginal, scarred figures who create, are born from, or move away from their nest of discarded fabric. With the yearning to be blank pages, mirrors in which one can see and rethink oneself, the non-characters are endowed with bodily consciousness and move within an intimate environment—a space of meditation for both themselves and the audience, inhabited by silences and slowness. The stage body evokes the animalistic, the insect-like, the broken struggle of a sprout breaking through the seed’s skin and discovering new realities.

Devoting itself to the body in every detail, almost to the point of losing awareness of its wholeness, it considers the body as a territory and, by discovering it for itself and for the audience, brings the latter closer to the importance of its own emotions. The performance is an interval of meditation where silence—the necessary space for the development of thought—and slowness—an anachronistic space useful for the knowledge of detail—reign.

The very first inspiration was this poem by Giuditta Re:

Even with some effort
the sprout
is architecturally programmed
to be a cathedral
