…a community, in order to define itself, necessarily needs to draw a boundary. A symbolic line marking the end of us and the beginning of the other.

Aime, Comunità, Il Mulino

By border we mean a line, a zone of separation between two natural and/or political-administrative surfaces.

It refers to something that divides and, at times, marks the non-identity of one part with respect to the other, emphasizing differences in order to exclude them rather than celebrating their beauty.

A boundary is therefore necessary — to define oneself and, consequently, others, and/or vice versa. What matters, however, is to understand what meaning people attribute to such boundaries.

Aime, Comunità, Il Mulino

Exploring this concept, we aim to overturn the common notion of division and instead attempt to inhabit those inner spaces where the encounter with the different inspires wonder and curiosity, where action arises from urgency, and where prohibition opens up new possibilities for knowledge. The limit within which one chooses to move becomes a means to choose, to diverge, to contaminate, and to listen — to what is on this side and what is on the other — where the impossibility of contact drives us to find new relational strategies to bridge that void created by the erasure of bodies.

Three dancers and two musicians come together, sharing their languages through improvisation and site-specific actions. Bodies and sounds will attempt to tell a di-verse story — one of inclusion, listening, and the joy of being together.

The project originates from the performance Visavì, presented in October 2020 in Piazza Transalpina, Gorizia — a symbolic place where a wall once stood dividing the Italian city from the Slovenian Nova Gorica.

The work was commissioned by Artisti Associati, organizers of the Gorizia Dance Festival_Visavì.
